Mold in Air Conditioners
One common source of microbial spores in your home can originate in window, wall mounted and mini-split (ductless) air conditioners. Mold can grow deep within the air chambers out of reach from normal wiping and cleaning of the filter. When the AC is turned on, the fan blows thousands if not millions of mold spores all around your living area.
It is recommended that the air/blower chamber as well as the filter and air intake chamber all be cleaned with antimicrobial. Also, cleaning coils and fins (only use a AC rated cleaner on coils and fins – most antimicrobial sprays may be corrosive to fins and coils). Refer to manufacture specifications for proper cleaning procedures. Mini-splits may require dismantling of the casing and cleaning while still mounted on the walls, using a mini-split HVAC specialist is recommended. Units should be cleaned at a minimum of twice a year and before storing window units for winter months as to not transfer spores to and from storage areas/closets/attics/basements.
